Background of the Study
Mobile banking has transformed the way businesses and individuals interact with financial services. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, mobile banking offers an accessible and cost-effective means of managing financial transactions, making payments, and receiving funds. Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has witnessed significant growth in mobile banking adoption among local SMEs, driven by increased mobile phone penetration and the desire for efficient financial management (Aminu & Idris, 2024).
Mobile banking allows SMEs to access banking services remotely, without the need for physical visits to bank branches. This convenience reduces operational costs, saves time, and facilitates easier access to credit and financial services, which can positively impact SME profitability. However, while mobile banking offers numerous benefits, it also presents challenges such as cybersecurity risks, service reliability, and digital illiteracy among business owners. This study investigates the effect of mobile banking on the profitability of SMEs in Gombe State, analyzing both the advantages and challenges faced by these businesses.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of mobile banking in Nigeria, the effect of mobile banking adoption on the profitability of SMEs, particularly in Gombe State, remains underexplored. Many SMEs in the region face significant barriers to accessing formal banking services, and while mobile banking offers a potential solution, its full impact on business profitability is yet to be fully understood.
